S.; Масленников, Сергей Павлович© 2022, Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature.The efficiency and effectiveness of logging equipment are largely determined by the amplitude-time characteristics of neutron fluxes, which depend on the parameters of the magnetic field generating systems, anode voltage pulses, gas composition, gas pressure, and others. The processes of restoration of the breakdown strength of gas in the interelectrode gap during the pauses between the supply voltage pulses affect the discharge ignition conditions and stability of the neutron flux characteristics. The results of experimental investigations of the pulse-packet operating regimes of Penning ion sources under conditions of wide adjustment of the parameters of the control and power systems for neutron tubes are reported.

The amplitude-time characteristics of discharge and extracted currents were investigated as a function of gas pressure for various magnetic field magnitude and configuration An effect of magnetic field configuration on the Penning's discharge modes and characteristics of the extraction current impulse were experimentally shown. Stable operation modes of the ion source were found in this work. Also the appropriate ranges of working gas pressure and magnetic field configuration were demonstrated, at which the current pulse of the extracted ions had a quasi-rectangular form. For better understanding real magnetic fields distributions of within the discharge cell magnetic field have been calculated in COMSOL software.

It is shown that the presence of capacitance of the collector and inductance of the external circuit under certain conditions can lead to the appearance of large inhibitory voltage values and deterioration of the klystron output parameters. The results of experimental studies are presented.

The results of studies of the generation modes of a pulsed Penning discharge, the formation of ion fluxes depending on the duty cycle of the supply pulses, the amplitude of the discharge current, as well as under conditions of batch-pulse control, are presented. The stability of Penning discharge generation under conditions of wide tuning of the control system parameters is shown to be affected by the amplitude–time characteristics of the anode voltage pulses and the zero-level potential in the pauses between pulses. © 2022, Pleiades Publishing, Inc.

Also the dependence of the discharge current pulse on the gas pressure and magnetic field are presented. Plasma behavior (electron and ion density in axial and radial dimensional) depending on magnitude (and configuration) of the magnetic field and pressure (working gas is deuterium) was shown.
