Studies of Charm Quark Diffusion inside Jets Using Pb-Pb and pp Collisions at root s(NN)=5.02 TeV
(2020) Sirunyan, A. M.; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Ambrogi, F.; Matveev, V.; Chistov, R.; Danilov, M.; Parygin, P.; Philippov, D.; Polikarpov, S.; Tarkovskii, E.; Dremin, I.; Матвеев, Виктор Анатольевич; Чистов, Руслан Николаевич; Данилов, Михаил Владимирович; Поликарпов, Сергей Михайлович
The first study of charm quark diffusion with respect to the jet axis in heavy ion collisions is presented. The measurement is performed using jets with p(T)(jet) > 60 GeV/c and D-0 mesons with p(T)(D) > 4 GeV/c in lead-lead (Pb-Pb) and proton-proton (pp) collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of root s(NN) = 5.02 TeV, recorded by the CMS detector at the LHC. The radial distribution of D-0 mesons with respect to the jet axis is sensitive to the production mechanisms of the meson, as well as to the energy loss and diffusion processes undergone by its parent parton inside the strongly interacting medium produced in Pb-Pb collisions. When compared to Monte Carlo event generators, the radial distribution in pp collisions is found to be well described by PYTHIA, while the slope of the distribution predicted by SHERPA is steeper than that of the data. In Pb-Pb collisions, compared to the pp results, the D-0 meson distribution for 4 < p(T)(D) < 20 GeV/c hints at a larger distance on average with respect to the jet axis, reflecting a diffusion of charm quarks in the medium created in heavy ion collisions. At higher p(T)(D), the Pb-Pb and pp radial distributions are found to be similar.

Search for charged Higgs bosons decaying into a top and a bottom quark in the all-jet final state of pp collisions at √s = 13 TeV
(2020) Sirunyan, A. M.; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Ambrogi, F.; Matveev, V.; Bychkova, O.; Chistov, R.; Danilov, M.; Polikarpov, S.; Tarkovskii, E.; Матвеев, Виктор Анатольевич; Чистов, Руслан Николаевич; Данилов, Михаил Владимирович; Поликарпов, Сергей Михайлович
© 2020, The Author(s).A search for charged Higgs bosons (H±) decaying into a top and a bottom quark in the all-jet final state is presented. The analysis uses LHC proton-proton collision data recorded with the CMS detector in 2016 at s = 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb−1. No significant excess is observed above the expected background. Model-independent upper limits at 95% confidence level are set on the product of the H± production cross section and branching fraction in two scenarios. For production in association with a top quark, limits of 21.3 to 0.007 pb are obtained for H± masses in the range of 0.2 to 3 TeV. Combining this with a search in leptonic final states results in improved limits of 9.25 to 0.005 pb. The complementary s-channel production of an H± is investigated in the mass range of 0.8 to 3 TeV and the corresponding upper limits are 4.5 to 0.023 pb. These results are interpreted using different minimal supersymmetric extensions of the standard model. [Figure not available: see fulltext.].

Measurements of production cross sections of WZ and same-sign WW boson pairs in association with two jets in proton-proton collisions at s=13TeV
(2020) Sirunyan, A. M.; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Ambrogi, F.; Chistov, R.; Danilov, M.; Oskin, A.; Parygin, P.; Rusinov, V.; Matveev, V.; Чистов, Руслан Николаевич; Данилов, Михаил Владимирович; Русинов, Владимир Юрьевич; Матвеев, Виктор Анатольевич
© 2020 The AuthorMeasurements of production cross sections of WZ and same-sign WW boson pairs in association with two jets in proton-proton collisions at s=13TeV at the LHC are reported. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 137fb−1, collected with the CMS detector during 2016–2018. The measurements are performed in the leptonic decay modes [Formula presented] and [Formula presented], where ℓ,ℓ′=e, [Formula presented]. Differential fiducial cross sections as functions of the invariant masses of the jet and charged lepton pairs, as well as of the leading-lepton transverse momentum, are measured for W±W± production and are consistent with the standard model predictions. The dependence of differential cross sections on the invariant mass of the jet pair is also measured for WZ production. An observation of electroweak production of WZ boson pairs is reported with an observed (expected) significance of 6.8 (5.3) standard deviations. Constraints are obtained on the structure of quartic vector boson interactions in the framework of effective field theory.

Evidence for Top Quark Production in Nucleus-Nucleus Collisions
(2020) Sirunyan, A. M.; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Ambrogi, F.; Matveev, V.; Chistov, R.; Danilov, M.; Parygin, P.; Philippov, D.; Polikarpov, S.; Матвеев, Виктор Анатольевич; Чистов, Руслан Николаевич; Данилов, Михаил Владимирович; Поликарпов, Сергей Михайлович
© 2020 CERN.Ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions recreate in the laboratory the thermodynamical conditions prevailing in the early universe up to 10-6 sec, thereby allowing the study of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP), a state of quantum chromodynamics (QCD) matter with deconfined partons. The top quark, the heaviest elementary particle known, is accessible in nucleus-nucleus collisions at the CERN LHC, and constitutes a novel probe of the QGP. Here, we report the first evidence for the production of top quarks in nucleus-nucleus collisions, using lead-lead collision data at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV recorded by the CMS experiment. Two methods are used to measure the cross section for top quark pair production (σtt) via the selection of charged leptons (electrons or muons) and bottom quarks. One method relies on the leptonic information alone, and the second one exploits, in addition, the presence of bottom quarks. The measured cross sections, σtt=2.54-0.74+0.84 and 2.03-0.64+0.71 μb, respectively, are compatible with expectations from scaled proton-proton data and QCD predictions.

Measurements of (tt)over-barH Production and the CP Structure of the Yukawa Interaction between the Higgs Boson and Top Quark in the Diphoton Decay Channel
(2020) Sirunyan, A. M.; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Ambrogi, F.; Bychkova, O.; Chistov, R.; Danilov, M.; Philippov, D.; Polikarpov, S.; Matveev, V.; Чистов, Руслан Николаевич; Данилов, Михаил Владимирович; Поликарпов, Сергей Михайлович; Матвеев, Виктор Анатольевич
The first observation of the (tt) over barH process in a single Higgs boson decay channel with the full reconstruction of the final state (H -> gamma gamma) is presented, with a significance of 6.6 standard deviations (sigma). The CP structure of Higgs boson couplings to fermions is measured, resulting in an exclusion of the pure CP-odd structure of the top Yukawa coupling at 3.2 sigma. The measurements are based on a sample of protonproton collisions at a center-of-mass energy root s = 13 TeV collected by the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb(-1). The cross section times branching fraction of the (tt) over barH process is measured to be sigma B-(tt) over barH(gamma gamma) = 1.56(-0.32)(+0.34) th, which is compatible with the standard model prediction of 1.13(-0.11)(+0.08) fb. The fractional contribution of the CP-odd component is measured to be f(CP)(Hu) = 0.00 +/- 0.33.

Search for decays of the 125 GeV Higgs boson into a Z boson and a ρ or ϕ meson
(2020) Sirunyan, A. M.; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Ambrogi, F.; Matveev, V.; Chistov, R.; Danilov, M.; Oskin, A.; Parygin, P.; Polikarpov, S.; Матвеев, Виктор Анатольевич; Чистов, Руслан Николаевич; Данилов, Михаил Владимирович; Поликарпов, Сергей Михайлович
© 2020, The Author(s).Decays of the 125 GeV Higgs boson into a Z boson and a ρ0(770) or ϕ(1020) meson are searched for using proton-proton collision data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC at s = 13 TeV. The analysed data set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb−1. Events are selected in which the Z boson decays into a pair of electrons or a pair of muons, and the ρ and ϕ mesons decay into pairs of pions and kaons, respectively. No significant excess above the background model is observed. As different polarization states are possible for the decay products of the Z boson and ρ or ϕ mesons, affecting the signal acceptance, scenarios in which the decays are longitudinally or transversely polarized are considered. Upper limits at the 95% confidence level on the Higgs boson branching fractions into Zρ and Zϕ are determined to be 1.04–1.31% and 0.31–0.40%, respectively, where the ranges reflect the considered polarization scenarios; these values are 740–940 and 730–950 times larger than the respective standard model expectations. These results constitute the first experimental limits on the two decay channels. [Figure not available: see fulltext.]

Measurement of the top quark Yukawa coupling from t t ¯ kinematic distributions in the dilepton final state in proton-proton collisions at s =13 TeV MEASUREMENT of the TOP QUARK YUKAWA COUPLING ... SIRUNYAN A. M. et al.
(2020) Sirunyan, A. M.; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Ambrogi, F.; Chadeeva, M.; Chistov, R.; Oskin, A.; Parygin, P.; Polikarpov, S.; Matveev, V.; Чадеева, Марина Валентиновна; Чистов, Руслан Николаевич; Поликарпов, Сергей Михайлович; Матвеев, Виктор Анатольевич
© 2020 CERN.A measurement of the Higgs boson Yukawa coupling to the top quark is presented using proton-proton collision data at s=13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb-1, recorded with the CMS detector. The coupling strength with respect to the standard model value, Yt, is determined from kinematic distributions in tt¯ final states containing ee, μμ, or eμ pairs. Variations of the Yukawa coupling strength lead to modified distributions for tt¯ production. In particular, the distributions of the mass of the tt¯ system and the rapidity difference of the top quark and antiquark are sensitive to the value of Yt. The measurement yields a best fit value of Yt=1.16-0.35+0.24, bounding Yt<1.54 at a 95% confidence level.

    Observation of the B-s(0) -> X(3872)phi Decay
(2020) Sirunyan, A. M.; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Ambrogi, F.; Bychkova, O.; Chistov, R.; Danilov, M.; Philippov, D.; Polikarpov, S.; Matveev, V.; Чистов, Руслан Николаевич; Данилов, Михаил Владимирович; Поликарпов, Сергей Михайлович; Матвеев, Виктор Анатольевич
Using a data sample of proton-proton collisions at root s = 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb(-1) collected by the CMS experiment in 2016-2018, the B-s(0) -> X(3872)phi decay is observed. Decays into J/psi pi(+)pi(-) and K+K- are used to reconstruct, respectively, the X(3872) and phi. The ratio of the product of branching fractions B[B-s(0) -> X(3872)phi]B[X(3872) -> J/psi pi(+)pi(-)] to the product B[B-s(0) ->psi(2S)phi]B[psi(2S) -> J/psi pi(+)pi(-)] is measured to be [2.21 +/- 0.29(stat) +/- 0.17(syst)]%. The ratio B[B-s(0) -> X(3872)phi]/B[B-0 -> X(3872)K-0] is found to be consistent with one, while the ratio B[B-s(0) -> X(3872)phi]/B[B+-> X(3872)K+] is two times smaller. This suggests a difference in the production dynamics of the X(3872) in B-0 and B(0)s meson decays compared to B+. The reported observation may shed new light on the nature of the X(3872) particle.

Search for physics beyond the standard model in events with jets and two same-sign or at least three charged leptons in proton-proton collisions at √s=13TeV
(2020) Sirunyan, A. M.; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Ambrogi, F.; Chistov, R.; Danilov, M.; Parygin, P.; Polikarpov, S.; Tarkovskii, E.; Matveev, V.; Чистов, Руслан Николаевич; Данилов, Михаил Владимирович; Поликарпов, Сергей Михайлович; Матвеев, Виктор Анатольевич
© 2020, CERN for the benefit of the CMS collaboration.A data sample of events from proton-proton collisions with at least two jets, and two isolated same-sign or three or more charged leptons, is studied in a search for signatures of new physics phenomena. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 137fb-1 at a center-of-mass energy of 13TeV, collected in 2016–2018 by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The search is performed using a total of 168 signal regions defined using several kinematic variables. The properties of the events are found to be consistent with the expectations from standard model processes. Exclusion limits at 95% confidence level are set on cross sections for the pair production of gluinos or squarks for various decay scenarios in the context of supersymmetric models conserving or violating R parity. The observed lower mass limits are as large as 2.1TeV for gluinos and 0.9TeV for top and bottom squarks. To facilitate reinterpretations, model-independent limits are provided in a set of simplified signal regions.

Measurement of t t ¯ normalised multi-differential cross sections in pp collisions at √s=13TeV , and simultaneous determination of the strong coupling strength, top quark pole mass, and parton distribution functions
(2020) Sirunyan, A. M.; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Ambrogi, F.; Aushev, T.; Chistov, R.; Danilov, M.; Philippov, D.; Matveev, V.; Dremin, I.; Tarkovskii, E.; Чистов, Руслан Николаевич; Данилов, Михаил Владимирович; Матвеев, Виктор Анатольевич
© 2020, CERN for the benefit of the CMS collaboration.Normalised multi-differential cross sections for top quark pair (t t ¯) production are measured in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13TeV using events containing two oppositely charged leptons. The analysed data were recorded with the CMS detector in 2016 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35.9fb-1. The double-differential t t ¯ cross section is measured as a function of the kinematic properties of the top quark and of the t t ¯ system at parton level in the full phase space. A triple-differential measurement is performed as a function of the invariant mass and rapidity of the t t ¯ system and the multiplicity of additional jets at particle level. The data are compared to predictions of Monte Carlo event generators that complement next-to-leading-order (NLO) quantum chromodynamics (QCD) calculations with parton showers. Together with a fixed-order NLO QCD calculation, the triple-differential measurement is used to extract values of the strong coupling strength αS and the top quark pole mass (mtpole) using several sets of parton distribution functions (PDFs). The measurement of mtpole exploits the sensitivity of the t t ¯ invariant mass distribution to mtpole near the production threshold. Furthermore, a simultaneous fit of the PDFs, αS, and mtpole is performed at NLO, demonstrating that the new data have significant impact on the gluon PDF, and at the same time allow an accurate determination of αS and mtpole. The values αS(mZ)=0.1135-0.0017+0.0021 and mtpole=170.5±0.8GeV are extracted, which account for experimental and theoretical uncertainties, the latter being estimated from NLO scale variations. Possible effects from Coulomb and soft-gluon resummation near the t t ¯ production threshold are neglected in these parameter extractions. A rough estimate of these effects indicates an expected correction of mtpole of the order of +1GeV, which can be regarded as additional theoretical uncertainty in the current mtpole extraction.
