Proton-proton interactions and onset of deconfinement

The experiment of the NA61/SHINE Collaboration at the CERN SPS is performing a unique study of the phase diagram of strongly interacting matter by varying collision energy and nuclear mass number of colliding nuclei. In central Pb + Pb collisions, the experiment of the NA49 Collaboration found structures in the energy dependence of several observables in the energy range of the CERN SPS that had been predicted for the transition to a deconfined phase. New measurements of the NA61/SHINE Collaboration find intriguing similarities in p + p interactions for which no deconfinement transition is expected at the energies of the SPS. Possible implications will be discussed.

Measurements of π± , K± , p and p¯ spectra in 7 Be+ 9 Be collisions at beam momenta from 19A to 150A GeV/c with the NA61/SHINE spectrometer at the CERN SPS

© 2021, The Author(s).The NA61/SHINE experiment at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) studies the onset of deconfinement in hadron matter by a scan of particle production in collisions of nuclei with various sizes at a set of energies covering the SPS energy range. This paper presents results on inclusive double-differential spectra, transverse momentum and rapidity distributions and mean multiplicities of π±, K±, p and p¯ produced in the 20% most central7Be+9Be collisions at beam momenta of 19A, 30A, 40A, 75A and 150A GeV/c. The energy dependence of the K±/π± ratios as well as of inverse slope parameters of the K± transverse mass distributions are close to those found in inelastic p+p reactions. The new results are compared to the world data on p+p and Pb+Pb collisions as well as to predictions of the Epos, Urqmd, Ampt, Phsd and Smash models.

K∗(892) meson production in inelastic p+p interactions at 40 and 80 GeV/c beam momenta measured by NA61/SHINE at the CERN SPS

© 2022, The Author(s).Measurements of K∗(892) resonance production via its K+π- decay mode in inelastic p+p collisions at beam momenta 40 and 80 GeV/c (sNN=8.8 and 12.3 GeV) are presented. The data were recorded by the NA61/SHINE hadron spectrometer at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron. The template method was used to extract the K∗(892) signal. Transverse momentum and rapidity spectra were obtained. The mean multiplicities of K∗(892) mesons were found to be (35.1 ± 1.3 (stat) ± 3.6 (sys)) · 10 - 3 at 40 GeV/c and (58.3 ± 1.9 (stat) ± 4.9 (sys)) · 10 - 3 at 80 GeV/c. The NA61/SHINE results are compared with the Epos1.99 and Hadron Resonance Gas models as well as with world data. The transverse mass spectra of K∗(892) mesons and other particles previously reported by NA61/SHINE were fitted within the Blast-Wave model. The transverse flow velocities are close to 0.1–0.2 of the speed of light and are significantly smaller than the ones determined in heavy nucleus-nucleus interactions at the same beam momenta.

NA61/SHINE, a large-acceptance hadron spectrometer, has recorded hadron+nucleus interactions relevant to ongoing and future long-baseline neutrino experiments at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. This paper presents three analyses of interactions of 60 GeV/c π+ with thin, fixed carbon and beryllium targets. Integrated production and inelastic cross sections were measured for both of these reactions. In an analysis of strange, neutral hadron production, differential production multiplicities of KS0, Λ and Λ were measured. Lastly, in an analysis of charged hadron production, differential production multiplicities of π+, π-, K+, K- A nd protons were measured. These measurements will enable long-baseline neutrino experiments to better constrain predictions of their neutrino flux in order to achieve better precision on their neutrino cross section and oscillation measurements.

Measurements of production and inelastic cross sections for p plus C, p plus Be, and p + Al at 60 GeV/c and p plus C and p + Be at 120 GeV/c

This paper presents measurements of production cross sections and inelastic cross sections for the following reactions: 60 GeV/c protons with C, Be, Al targets and 120 GeV/c protons with C and Be targets. The analysis is performed using the NA61/SHINE spectrometer at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron. First measurements are obtained using protons at 120 GeV/c, while the results for protons at 60 GeV/c are compared with previously published measurements. These interaction cross section measurements are critical inputs for neutrino flux prediction in current and future accelerator-based long-baseline neutrino experiments.

Hidden strangeness shines in NA61/SHINE

Preliminary results on the phi (1020) meson production in inelastic proton-proton collisions measured by the NA61/SHINE experiment at the CERN SPS are presented in these proceedings. The results include the first ever differential P-T and y measurements at beam momenta of 40 and 80 GeV and the most ever detailed experimental data at 158 GeV. The comparison of p + p to Pb + Pb results shows a non-trivial system size dependence of the widths of the rapidity distributions for phi mesons, contrasting with that of other hadrons. The results are furthermore compared to the world data on phi meson production, demonstrating the better accuracy achieved by the NA61/SHINE experiment, and to several models. None of the models is found to be able to describe simultaneously the shape of transverse momentum spectra, the shape of rapidity distribution and the total yield.

Measurements of Ξ (1530) and Ξ ¯ (1530) production in proton–proton interactions at √sNN = 17.3 GeV in the NA61/SHINE experiment

© 2021, The Author(s).Double-differential yields of Ξ (1530) and Ξ ¯ (1530) resonances produced in p+p interactions were measured at a laboratory beam momentum of 158 GeV/c. This measurement is the first of its kind in p+p interactions below LHC energies. It was performed at the CERN SPS by the NA61/SHINE collaboration. Double-differential distributions in rapidity and transverse momentum were obtained from a sample of 26 × 10 6 inelastic events. The spectra are extrapolated to full phase space resulting in mean multiplicity of Ξ (1530) (6.73 ± 0.25 ± 0.67) × 10 - 4 and Ξ ¯ (1530) (2.71 ± 0.18 ± 0.18) × 10 - 4. The rapidity and transverse momentum spectra and mean multiplicities were compared to predictions of string-hadronic and statistical model calculations.
