Proton-proton interactions and onset of deconfinement
(2020) Aduszkiewicz, A.; Andronov, E. V.; Anticic, T.; Babkin, V.; Brandin, A.; Golosov, O.; Kargin, N.; Kashirin, E.; Morozov, S.; Selyuzhenkov, I.; Strikhanov, M.; Taranenko, A.; Брандин, Андрей Владимирович; Голосов, Олег Владимирович; Каргин, Николай Иванович; Стриханов, Михаил Николаевич; Тараненко, Аркадий Владимирович
The experiment of the NA61/SHINE Collaboration at the CERN SPS is performing a unique study of the phase diagram of strongly interacting matter by varying collision energy and nuclear mass number of colliding nuclei. In central Pb + Pb collisions, the experiment of the NA49 Collaboration found structures in the energy dependence of several observables in the energy range of the CERN SPS that had been predicted for the transition to a deconfined phase. New measurements of the NA61/SHINE Collaboration find intriguing similarities in p + p interactions for which no deconfinement transition is expected at the energies of the SPS. Possible implications will be discussed.

The chiral magnetic effect (CME) refers to charge separation along a strong magnetic field due to imbalanced chirality of quarks in local parity and charge-parity violating domains in quantum chromodynamics. The experimental measurement of the charge separation is made difficult by the presence of a major background from elliptic azimuthal anisotropy. This background and the CME signal have different sensitivities to the spectator and participant planes, and could thus be determined by measurements with respect to these planes. We report such measurements in Au + Au collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 200 GeV at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider. It is found that the charge separation, with the flow background removed, is consistent with zero in peripheral (large impact parameter) collisions. Some indication of finite CME signals is seen in midcentral (intermediate impact parameter) collisions. Significant residual background effects may, however, still be present.

Polarization of Λ (Λ ) Hyperons along the Beam Direction in Au+Au Collisions at sNN =200 GeV

© 2019 American Physical Society. The Λ (Λ̄) hyperon polarization along the beam direction has been measured in Au+Au collisions at sNN=200 GeV, for the first time in heavy-ion collisions. The polarization dependence on the hyperons' emission angle relative to the elliptic flow plane exhibits a second harmonic sine modulation, indicating a quadrupole pattern of the vorticity component along the beam direction, expected due to elliptic flow. The polarization is found to increase in more peripheral collisions, and shows no strong transverse momentum (pT) dependence at pT greater than 1 GeV/c. The magnitude of the signal is about 5 times smaller than those predicted by hydrodynamic and multiphase transport models; the observed phase of the emission angle dependence is also opposite to these model predictions. In contrast, the kinematic vorticity calculations in the blast-wave model tuned to reproduce particle spectra, elliptic flow, and the azimuthal dependence of the Gaussian source radii measured with the Hanbury Brown-Twiss intensity interferometry technique reproduce well the modulation phase measured in the data and capture the centrality and transverse momentum dependence of the polarization signal.

NA61/SHINE, a large-acceptance hadron spectrometer, has recorded hadron+nucleus interactions relevant to ongoing and future long-baseline neutrino experiments at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. This paper presents three analyses of interactions of 60 GeV/c π+ with thin, fixed carbon and beryllium targets. Integrated production and inelastic cross sections were measured for both of these reactions. In an analysis of strange, neutral hadron production, differential production multiplicities of KS0, Λ and Λ were measured. Lastly, in an analysis of charged hadron production, differential production multiplicities of π+, π-, K+, K- A nd protons were measured. These measurements will enable long-baseline neutrino experiments to better constrain predictions of their neutrino flux in order to achieve better precision on their neutrino cross section and oscillation measurements.

    Hidden strangeness shines in NA61/SHINE
(2019) Klochkov, V.; Selyuzhenkov, I.; Aduszkiewicz, A.; Andronov, E. V.; Brandin, A.; Golosov, O.; Kargin, N.; Kashirin, E.; Morozov, S.; Strikhanov, M.; Taranenko, A.; Брандин, Андрей Владимирович; Голосов, Олег Владимирович; Каргин, Николай Иванович; Стриханов, Михаил Николаевич; Тараненко, Аркадий Владимирович
Preliminary results on the phi (1020) meson production in inelastic proton-proton collisions measured by the NA61/SHINE experiment at the CERN SPS are presented in these proceedings. The results include the first ever differential P-T and y measurements at beam momenta of 40 and 80 GeV and the most ever detailed experimental data at 158 GeV. The comparison of p + p to Pb + Pb results shows a non-trivial system size dependence of the widths of the rapidity distributions for phi mesons, contrasting with that of other hadrons. The results are furthermore compared to the world data on phi meson production, demonstrating the better accuracy achieved by the NA61/SHINE experiment, and to several models. None of the models is found to be able to describe simultaneously the shape of transverse momentum spectra, the shape of rapidity distribution and the total yield.

Measurement of inclusive charged-particle jet production in Au plus Au collisions ats root S-NN=200 GeV
(2020) Adam, J.; Adamczyk, L.; Adams, J. R.; Adkins, J. K.; Alekseev, I.; Brandin, A. V.; Khyzhniak, Y. V.; Kochenda, L.; Kravtsov, P.; Nigmatkulov, G.; Okorokov, V. The STAR Collaboration at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider reports the first measurement of inclusive jet production in peripheral and central Au+Au collisions at root S-NN = 200 GeV. Jets are reconstructed with the anti-k(T) algorithm using charged tracks with pseudorapidity vertical bar n vertical bar < 1.0 and transverse momentum 0.2 < p(T,jet)(ch) < 30 GeV/c, with jet resolution parameter R = 0.2, 0.3, and 0.4. The large background yield uncorrelated with the jet signal is observed to be dominated by statistical phase space, consistent with a previous coincidence measurement. This background is suppressed by requiring a high-transverse-momentum (high-p(T)) leading hadron in accepted jet candidates. The bias imposed by this requirement is assessed, and the p(T) region in which the bias is small is identified. Inclusive charged-particle jet distributions are reported in peripheral and central Au+Au collisions for 5 < p(T,jet)(ch) < 25 GeV/c and 5 < p(T,jet)(ch) < 30 GeV/c, respectively. The charged-particle jet inclusive yield is suppressed for central Au+Au collisions, compared to both the peripheral Au+Au yield from this measurement and to the pp yield calculated using the PYTHIA event generator. The magnitude of the suppression is consistent with that of inclusive hadron production at high p(T) and that of semi-inclusive recoil jet yield when expressed in terms of energy loss due to medium-induced energy transport. Comparison of inclusive charged-particle jet yields for different values of R exhibits no significant evidence for medium-induced broadening of the transverse jet profile for R <0.4 in central Au+Au collisions. The measured distributions are consistent with theoretical model calculations that incorporate jet quenching.

Global and local polarization of A hyperons in Au plus Au collisions at 200 GeV from STAR
(2019) Niida, T.; Adam, J.; Adamczyk, L.; Adams, J. R.; Alekseev, I.; Brandin, A. V.; Kochenda, L.; Kravtsov, P.; Nigmatkulov, G.; Okorokov, V. New results on global polarization of A hyperons in Au+Au collisions at root s(NN) = 200 GeV reveal non-zero signal on the order of a few tenths of a percent. Compared with lower energy results, the current measurement shows that the polarization decreases at higher collision energy, the trend being well reproduced by theoretical calculations. The polarization is found to be larger in more peripheral collisions, as well as in the in-plane than in the out-of-plane direction. The signal seems to depend on the asymmetry between positive and negative charge in each event, which may indicate an influence of the axial current induced by the magnetic field. In addition, the first measurement of a local polarization along the beam direction was performed. The results show a quadrupole modulation relative to the second-order event plane, as expected from the elliptic flow.

Observation of D-s(+/-)/D-0 Enhancement in Au plus Au Collisions at root s(NN)=200 GeV
(2021) Adam, J.; Adamczyk, L.; Adams, J. R.; Adkins, J. K.; Alekseev, I.; Brandin, A. V.; Khyzhniak, Y. V.; Kochenda, L.; Nigmatkulov, G.; Okorokov, V. We report on the first measurement of charm-strange meson D-s(+/-) production at midrapidity in Au + Au collisions at root s(NN) = 200 GeV from the STAR experiment. The yield ratio between strange (D-s(+/-)) and nonstrange (D-0) open-charm mesons is presented and compared to model calculations. A significant enhancement, relative to a PYTHIA simulation of p + p collisions, is observed in the D-s(+/-)/D-0 yield ratio in Au + Au collisions over a large range of collision centralities. Model calculations incorporating abundant strange-quark production in the quark-gluon plasma and coalescence hadronization qualitatively reproduce the data. The transverse-momentum integrated yield ratio of D-s(+/-)/D-0 at midrapidity is consistent with a prediction from a statistical hadronization model with the parameters constrained by the yields of light and strange hadrons measured at the same collision energy. These results suggest that the coalescence of charm quarks with strange quarks in the quark-gluon plasma plays an important role in D-s(+/-)-meson production in heavy-ion collisions.

Disappearance of partonic collectivity in sNN=3 GeV Au+Au collisions at RHIC
(2022) Abdallah, M. S.; Aboona, B. E.; Adam, J.; Adamczyk, L.; Alekseev, I.; Brandin, A. V.; Khyzhniak, Y. V.; Kochenda, L.; Kravtsov, P.; Nigmatkulov, G.; Okorokov, V. © 2022 The Author(s)We report on the measurements of directed flow v1 and elliptic flow v2 for hadrons (π±, K±, KS0, p, ϕ, Λ and Ξ−) from Au+Au collisions at sNN=3 GeV and v2 for (π±, K±, p and p‾) at 27 and 54.4 GeV with the STAR experiment. While at the two higher energy midcentral collisions the number-of-constituent-quark (NCQ) scaling holds, at 3 GeV the v2 at midrapidity is negative for all hadrons and the NCQ scaling is absent. In addition, the v1 slopes at midrapidity for almost all observed hadrons are found to be positive, implying dominant repulsive baryonic interactions. The features of negative v2 and positive v1 slope at 3 GeV can be reproduced with a baryonic mean-field in transport model calculations. These results imply that the medium in such collisions is likely characterized by baryonic interactions.
