Fast reconstruction of holographic and diffractive optical elements (DOE) can be implemented by binary digital micromirror devices (DMD). Since micromirrors of the DMD have two positions, the synthesized DOEs must be binary. This work studies the possibility of improving the method of synthesis of amplitude binary inline Fresnel holograms in divergent beams. The method consists of the modified Gerchberg–Saxton algorithm, Otsu binarization and direct search with random trajectory technique. To achieve a better quality of reconstruction, various binarization methods were compared. We performed numerical and optical experiments using the DMD. Holograms of halftone image with size up to 1024 × 1024 pixels were synthesized. It was determined that local and several global threshold methods provide the best quality. Compared to the Otsu binarization used in the original method of the synthesis, the reconstruction quality (MSE and SSIM values) is improved by 46% and the diffraction efficiency is increased by 27%.

Asymmetric image optical encryption under spatially incoherent illumination
(2020) Cheremkhin, P. A.; Evtikhiev, N. N.; Krasnov, V. V.; Rodin, V. G.; Shifrina, A. V.; Starikov, R. S.; Черёмхин, Павел Аркадьевич; Евтихиев, Николай Николаевич; Родин, Владислав Геннадьевич; Шифрина, Анна Владимировна; Стариков, Ростислав Сергеевич
In this paper new method of asymmetric optical encryption is presented. It is based on the double encryption using spatially incoherent illumination: to obtain a ciphertext a plaintext is encoded twice, first time by sender, second time-by recipient. This way no exchange of encryption keys is required. Two variants of this method were analyzed: one in which both encryption procedures are implemented optically and another one in which the first operation is done optically and the second one-numerically. Both variants were numerically simulated and the latter one was implemented optically. Results of numerical and optical experiments demonstrate high quality of decrypted images (decoding error 0.19), thus confirming usability of proposed method.

© 2021 IOP Publishing LtdQuick response (QR) codes have recently become a popular data container for optical encryption systems. Their effectiveness is based on the error-correction codes, that allow them to decode data even when the media itself is significantly damaged. However, QR codes were developed for specific applications and have a significant number of elements that are superfluous for optical encryption. In this paper we present a new customizable digital data container (CDDC), designed to replace QR codes in optical encryption. CDDC is based on the error-correction codes too, but has a wide range of configurable parameters and can be specialized for a particular optical setup. The results of noise robustness analysis, numerical and optical experiments on application of the new container in a spatially incoherent optical encryption system demonstrate the supremacy of CDDC in comparison to QR codes in terms of error correction capabilities and data density.

Computer-Generated Holography Methods for Data Page Reconstruction Using Phase-Only Medium
(2023) Minikhanov, T. Z.; Zlokazov, E. Y.; Cheremkhin, P. A.; Starikov, R. S.; Evtikhiev, N. N.; Злоказов, Евгений Юрьевич; Черёмхин, Павел Аркадьевич; Стариков, Ростислав Сергеевич; Евтихиев, Николай Николаевич
Achievements in the field of high-speed spatial modulation electrooptic components provide the possibility to create perspective optical-digital diffractive systems for information storage and processing that outperform modern electronic counterparts by utilizing throughput, energy efficiency, and reliability. This work presents a study of computer-generated holography methods that allow the formation of spatially-modulated information signals (data pages) with high accuracy using phase-only spatial light modulators. Computer-generated Fourier hologram fringe patterns were formed using bipolar intensity and double-phase coding. Numerical and experimental results of both methods’ implementation are compared. It was determined that bipolar intensity holograms provide higher data density on the data page if complex digital modulation methods such as multilevel amplitude and phase or quadrature modulation are used to represent data points. Double-phase coding can offer perspective for multilevel amplitude or multilevel intensity modulated data page reconstruction; however, exact control of phase modulation characteristics is required to obtain high reconstruction quality.

Estimation of the Efficiency of Digital Camera Photosensor Noise Measurement Through the Automatic Segmentation of Non-Uniform Target Methods and the Standard EMVA 1288
(2021) Evtikhiev, N. N.; Kozlov, A. V.; Krasnov, V. V.; Rodin, V. G.; Starikov, R. S.; Cheremkhin, P. A.; Евтихиев, Николай Николаевич; Козлов, Александр Валерьевич; Родин, Владислав Геннадьевич; Стариков, Ростислав Сергеевич; Черёмхин, Павел Аркадьевич
This paper discusses the problem of characterizing digital cameras and the determination of their noise characteristics, which is relevant for contemporary photographic equipment. The issues of limiting the accuracy of data obtained with digital cameras, related to the photosensor noise, are also highlighted. The European Machine Vision Association standard EMVA 1288 for measurement and presentation of specifications for machine vision sensors and cameras, and fast automatic segmentation of non-uniform target (ASNT) noise estimation methods are compared. The noise characteristics of the photosensors of the machine vision camera PixeLink PL-B781F, scientific camera Retiga R6, and amateur camera Canon EOS M100 are investigated. The accuracies of the measurement results and speed of calculation and the method implementation are also analyzed. The assessment of the temporal noise revealed that the ASNT method is not inferior in terms of accuracy compared to the standard method and can be implemented significantly faster, even with additional images taken into account for accuracy improvement.

© 2021 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland. The necessity of the correction of errors emerging during the optical encryption process led to the extensive use of data containers such as QR codes. However, due to specifics of optical encryption, QR codes are not very well suited for the task, which results in low error correction capabilities in optical experiments mainly due to easily breakable QR code’s service elements and byte data structure. In this paper, we present optical implementation of information optical encryption system utilizing new multilevel customizable digital data containers with high data density. The results of optical experiments demonstrate efficient error correction capabilities of the new data container.
