Pyrimidine-based dyes embedded in porous silicon microcavities for detection of nitroaromatic compounds

© 2019 SPIE.It is known that luminescent optical sensors are perspective for detection towards nitroaromatic compounds that are a basis of a many kind of explosives. Operation of these sensors is based on quenching luminescence, which is caused by photo-induced electron transfer from a luminophore (donor) to a nitroaromatic molecule (acceptor). The conjugated polymers, small molecule dyes and metal-organic frameworks are used as a sensitive luminophores currently. One of the methods to improve these sensors is embedding the luminophore into porous matrix with properties of photonic crystal, which may be a porous silicon (pSi) Bragg mirror or a microcavity (MC). The PPV derivatives polymers are usually used as the sensitive luminophores for embedding into pSi matrix. However, there is a task to find an optimal set of luminophores to develop a highly sensitive and selective sensor. In this work we investigate embedding of 5- triphenylamino-4-(triphenylaminothiophen-2-yl)-pyrimidine (HEM-461) into pSi MC and examine the sensitivity of obtained structures. The pSi MC were fabricated using a standard electrochemical etching process. The eigenmode of the pSi MC had a width of 4-6 nm. The samples were oxidized to stabilize the surface chemical properties and to prevent quenching of luminescence of the embedded luminophores after fabrication. The embedding of the dye into the pSi MC was performed at excess pressure. Well known conjugated polymer MDMO-PPV was used as a reference. In this work, we compared the photophysical properties of MDMO-PPV and HEM-461 in solution and into pSi MC. The luminescence parameters and resistance to heat have been studied. Comparative studies of sensitivity of MDMO-PPV and HEM-461 to trinitrotoluene in liquid and gaseous phases have been carried out. It was concluded that pSi MC with embedded HEM-461 is a promising structure for developing sensors of nitroaromatic compounds.

© 2021, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.Abstract: It is shown for the first time that multilayer periodic BaTiO3/SiO2 structures formed by the sol–gel method are tunable photonic crystals with dependence of the photonic band gap from the temperature of the sample. The shift of the minimum in the reflection spectrum in the photonic band gap is observed from 616 to 610 nm in the sample-temperature range from +184 to +24°C, respectively, and is reproduced for several samples synthesized at a temperature of 450°C.

Терагерцовые спектры пропускания конденсатов нитросоединений

Работа посвящена экспериментальному и теоретическому исследованию терагерцовых (ТГц) спектров пропускания пленки гексогена (RDX, циклотриметилентринитрамин) в частотной области интенсивной характеристической полосы поглощения RDX ~0.8 ТГц при различных углах падения (0˚ – 60˚) и поляризации зондирующего ТГц излучения. Регистрация экспериментальных ТГц спектров пропускания образца RDX проводилась с помощью установки ТГц радиовидения со спектральным разрешением. Для математического моделирования спектров использовался метод характеристических матриц среды (матриц переноса). Показано, что как в экспериментальных, так и в теоретических ТГц спектрах пропускания пленки RDX для всех исследуемых углов падения и поляризации зондирующего ТГц излучения отчетливо наблюдается проявление полосы поглощения гексогена в виде локального минимума в области частоты ~0.8 ТГц. Результаты работы могут быть использованы при разработке терагерцовых систем, предназначенных для спектральной идентификации веществ в конденсированном состоянии.

An analysis of the current state of research and development in the fi eld of radiovision for the terahertz range of electromagnetic radiation was carried out in the work. Various sources of terahertz radiation are considered: photoconductive antennas, IMPATT diodes, Schottky diodes, and others, as well as modern video cameras for this range and their main characteristics for recording and studying THz images in various spectral regions. The results of studies of the intensity distribution in THz radiation beams at diff erent wavelengths for photoconductive antennas using THz radiovision, as well as the possibilities of studying scattering processes during refl ection and transmission of THz radiation for various materials, are presented.
Photon counting mode for advanced real-time detection of bioaerosols

© 2021 SPIECurrently, one of the most important application of flow cytometry is the real-time analysis of aerosols, in particular, to ensure biosafety. In most cases, such analysis is aimed at detecting fluorescent signals from aerosol particles corresponding to the light emission of tryptophan and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH). Further development of the method is largely related to the improvement of the light detecting systems for recording and processing of fluorescence and scattered light signals. In this work, a comparative analysis of flow cytometers for bioaerosols detection based on photo-multiplier tubes (PMT) and avalanche photodiodes (APD) operating in analog and photon-counting modes was carried out. The limit of detection (LOD) of bioaerosols, response time and ability to detect particles with low scattering and fluorescence cross section were calculated and examined. The calculations were carried out for the well-known optical scheme of fluorescence detection based on discrete photodetectors and dichroic mirrors combined with an air flow chamber equipped with elliptical and spherical mirrors. An ultraviolet light emission diode (LED) was used as a model source of exciting radiation. To estimate the optical properties of aerosol particles, experimental results obtained for a model bovine serum albumin bioaerosol and published data on various other bioaerosols were used. The calculation of the total number of fluorescent photons, emitted by particles of various sizes while passing the flow chamber was carried out. The obtained data were compared with parameters of photodetectors operating in analog and photon-counting modes. The critical particle size was determined for the effective registration in a photon-counting mode. Considering the size distribution of aerosol particles, it was concluded that application of the photon-counting mode will reduce the LOD of bioaerosols by more than an order of magnitude.

© 2020, Allerton Press, Inc.Abstract: A study is made of the effect a surface ligand’s molecules have on the photoconductivity and photovoltaic effect in thin solid layers of structures based on PbS quantum dots. Thin solid layers are prepared of both quantum dots and bulk heterojunctions of a blend of quantum dots and fullerene derivative ([6,6]-phenyl-C(61)butyric acid ester (PCBM)). An exponential dependence of photoconductivity on the length of ligands is obtained for the quantum dot films, and the photovoltaic effect displays a strong dependence on the length of a ligand. In contrast, the effect the length of a ligand has on current–voltage characteristics and charge carrier mobility was not observed in bulk heterojunction structures with quantum dots. Physical reasons for the observed phenomena are discussed.

Sol-Gel Fabrication and Luminescence Properties of Multilayer Eu-Doped BaTiO3-SiO2 Xerogel Nanostructures

With the use of sol-gel method BaTiO3-SiO2 multilayer structures were fabricated on glass or fused silica substrates employing dipping or spinning procedure. The photonic stop band was observed in the reflection and transmission spectra of the multilayer structure annealed at 450 degrees C. It is redshifted with an increase of the thicknesses of BaTiO3 and SiO2 layers. For structures comprising Eu-doped BaTiO3 layers of different thicknesses photoluminescence with the main band at 614 nm was detected. It is characterized with the double-exponential decay with the lifetimes of about 0.5 ms and 1.1 ms which do not depend significantly on the photonic stop band position.
