Under practical manufacture conditions of foiled fiberglass printed circuit boards while drilling, a technological criterion for the evaluation of the wear of a cutting tool is used. In particular, the criterion for the emergence of an unacceptable value of copper foil burrs at the outlet of the resultant holes (the addressed terminal threshold is 30 µm). The development of burrs is associated with the extrusion of material under the action of a cutting force axial component dependent on the processing mode. In this work, a number of experiments were conducted in order to identify the most effective cutting conditions (a combination of spindle revolutions per minute of the n drilling machine and S axial feed traverse speed) enabling to obtain most of the satisfactory quality holes up to an unaccepted value of blunting of a cutting tool in relation to oblique determination techniques of treated holes quality. SF-2 (ZAO “Moldavizolit”), P96 (Isola), and Gem (Shangai Global Electronic) materials were used as prototypes. 2 mm Ham drills were used as a cutting tool. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
