© 2019, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.The results of the long-term measurements of extensive air showers with the calibration telescope system of the Cherenkov water detector are presented for an energy range of 1014–1017 eV. We have used two independent methods for reconstruction of the charged particle local density spectrum: by the multiplicity of the hit counters and by their amplitude responses. By means of Geant4 calculations, we have shown how the structure of the building and the water tank affect the results of the spectrum reconstruction. We obtained two different exponents of charged particles’ local density spectra for CTS top and bottom plane. The results are compared with CORSIKA calculations and data from other setups.

© 2019, Allerton Press, Inc.Abstract: Results are presented from analyzing experimental data on 0.1–10 TeV cascade showers generated by muons in the NEVOD Cherenkov water detector. The procedure for selecting and reconstructing the parameters of events with cascades in the detector volume is discussed. Results are presented from measurements of the zenith angle distribution of cascades for different energies. The measured distributions are compared to results from calculations.

    (2019) Khohlov, S. S.; Amelchakov, M. B.; Vorobyev, V. S.; Izhbulyakova, Z. T.; Kovylyaeva, A. A.; Хохлов, Семен Сергеевич; Амельчаков, Михаил Борисович; Воробьев, Владислав Станиславович
© 2019, Allerton Press, Inc.Abstract: Results are presented from studying the anisotropy of the flux of very high-energy cosmic rays on the basis of muon bundles. Events were recorded in the period 2012–2018 by the DECOR coordinate-tracking detector, part of the unique research setup of the NEVOD experimental complex. The results from analyzing the anisotropy for two samples of events with muon bundles corresponding to different ranges of primary particle energy (E > 1015 eV and E > 1016 eV) are discussed, and estimates are made of dipole anisotropy parameters (amplitude and phase).

© 2019, Allerton Press, Inc.Abstract: The NEVOD experimental complex was created at MEPhI. It includes several facilities for studying the electron–photon, muon, and hadron components of the EAS in the energy range of 1 PeV to 1 EeV. This work presents the first results for two months of the joint operation of five facilities (NEVOD-EAS, CWD, CTS, PRISMA-32, and DECOR). The problems of synchronizing the facilities and selecting joint events are considered. The experimental data of these facilities are analyzed for different components of the EAS in overlapping energy ranges.

© 2019, Allerton Press, Inc.Abstract: Energy characteristics of the muon component of extensive air showers (EASes) are investigated at the NEVOD experimental complex in order to solve the problem of a detected excess of muons in EASes at ultrahigh energies, relative to simulation results. The dependences of the energy deposit of muon bundles on the zenith angle and the local muon density are obtained for primary energies of 10–1000 PeV. The results from comparing the data to simulations performed with the CORSIKA program are presented.

© 2019, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.Two installations that allow to detect the EAS hadron component in a continuous mode, the Cherenkov water calorimeter (CWC) NEVOD and PRISMA-32 are operated in MEPhI. The comparison of the characteristics of EAS simultaneously registered by CWC NEVOD and PRISMA-32 are presented. Groups of events with different positions of the shower axis are considered.

© 2019, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.Investigations of the energy loss of muon bundles are being conducted at the Experimental complex NEVOD. Such investigations are directed to detailed study of “muon puzzle” (the excess of multi-muon events observed in several cosmic ray experiments at ultra-high energies). Results of measurements of the muon bundle energy deposit during a long period of observations in primary cosmic ray energy range 10–1000 PeV have been obtained and have been compared with simulations performed on the basis of the CORSIKA code.

Expected Spectra of Muon-Induced Cascades in IceCube
(2019) Khokhlov, S. S.; Bogdanov, A. G.; Kokoulin, R. P.; Petrukhin, A. A.; Sozinov, E. S.; Yurina, E. A.; Хохлов, Семен Сергеевич; Богданов, Алексей Георгиевич; Кокоулин, Ростислав Павлович; Петрухин, Анатолий Афанасьевич; Юрина, Екатерина Александровна
© 2019, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.The neutrino telescope IceCube is capable to reconstruct the energy spectrum of muons in very high energy region by means of measurements of muon-induced cascades. To compare with experimental data, the expected spectra of cascades were theoretically estimated. Calculations were performed for two variants of muon spectrum on the ice surface: a simple power-law energy spectrum with a differential slope index −3.7, and a composite spectrum combined of two power spectra with differential indexes −3.7 and −2.7. The differential spectra of cascades for different zenith angles and integral cascade spectra calculated for two variants of muon spectra are discussed.

Measuring the Cherenkov light yield from cosmic ray muon bundles in the water detector
(2020) Mannocchi, G.; Saavedra, O.; Trinchero, G.; Kokoulin, R. P.; Barbashina, N. S.; Bogdanov, A. G.; Khokhlov, S. S.; Khomyakov, V. A.; Kindin, V. V.; Kompaniets, K. G.; Petrukhin, A. © 2018 Elsevier B.V. An experiment on the measurements of the Cherenkov light yield from inclined cosmic ray muon bundles in water is being conducted at the Experimental complex NEVOD (MEPhI). The total number of Cherenkov photons is nearly proportional to the muon energy deposit (including secondary particles produced by muons and cascades from them) within the detector volume. Since at muon energies above a hundred GeV the energy loss is almost linearly related to the energy of muons, the average energy loss of the bundles carries information about the mean muon energy in such events. The complex includes the Cherenkov water calorimeter NEVOD with a volume of 2000 m3 and the coordinate-tracking detector DECOR with a total area of 70 m2. DECOR data are used to determine the local muon densities in the bundle events and their arrival directions, while the energy deposits are evaluated from the Cherenkov calorimeter response. The detection of the bundles in a wide range of muon multiplicities and zenith angles gives the opportunity to explore the energy range of primary cosmic ray particles from about 10 PeV to 1000 PeV and even higher in frame of a single experiment. Experimental results on the dependence of the muon bundle energy deposit on the zenith angle and the local muon density are presented and compared with expectations based on simulation of the EAS muon component by means of the CORSIKA code.
