© 2019 Elsevier B.V. The present study is focused on the hydrogen production properties of magnesium and magnesium-based materials at low temperatures (from −40 to 0 °C) in reaction with aqueous solutions (AlCl3, MgCl2). The experiments demonstrated that lowering the temperature of MgCl2 and AlCl3 solutions from 0 °C down to −30 °C and −40 °C respectively leads to a significant drop in magnesium conversion degree for both solutions: from 91.1 to 34.7% in case of AlCl3 and from 72.1 to 0% in case of MgCl2. A set of experiments at −40 °C with different AlCl3 concentrations demonstrated that an increase in AlCl3 concentration from 21.3 to 25.3 wt% results in a decrease in magnesium conversion degree from 56.6 to 37.4% for 180 min. And the experiments for mechanochemically treated magnesium powder and MgCl2 solution at −30 °C demonstrated that Ni, Ga, and AlCl3·6H2O additives provide hydrogen yields of 82.8, 73 and 47.5% for 180 min, and for magnesium powder ball-milled without additives this value is 67.2%.
