© 2019 The AuthorA search for high-mass dielectron and dimuon resonances in the mass range of 250 GeV to 6 TeV is presented. The data were recorded by the ATLAS experiment in proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of s=13 TeV during Run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb−1. A functional form is fitted to the dilepton invariant-mass distribution to model the contribution from background processes, and a generic signal shape is used to determine the significance of observed deviations from this background estimate. No significant deviation is observed and upper limits are placed at the 95% confidence level on the fiducial cross-section times branching ratio for various resonance width hypotheses. The derived limits are shown to be applicable to spin-0, spin-1 and spin-2 signal hypotheses. For a set of benchmark models, the limits are converted into lower limits on the resonance mass and reach 4.5 TeV for the E6-motivated Zψ ′ boson. Also presented are limits on Heavy Vector Triplet model couplings.

Measurement of isolated-photon plus two-jet production in pp collisions at √s = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

© 2020, The Author(s).The dynamics of isolated-photon plus two-jet production in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV are studied with the ATLAS detector at the LHC using a dataset corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb−1. Cross sections are measured as functions of a variety of observables, including angular correlations and invariant masses of the objects in the final state, γ + jet + jet. Measurements are also performed in phase-space regions enriched in each of the two underlying physical mechanisms, namely direct and fragmentation processes. The measurements cover the range of photon (jet) transverse momenta from 150 GeV (100 GeV) to 2 TeV. The tree-level plus parton-shower predictions from Sherpa and Pythia as well as the next-to-leading-order QCD predictions from Sherpa are compared with the measurements. The next-to-leading-order QCD predictions describe the data adequately in shape and normalisation except for regions of phase space such as those with high values of the invariant mass or rapidity separation of the two jets, where the predictions overestimate the data. © 2020, CERN for the benefit of the ATLAS collaboration.A search for the electroweak production of charginos and sleptons decaying into final states with two electrons or muons is presented. The analysis is based on 139 fb- 1 of proton–proton collisions recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider at s=13 TeV. Three R-parity-conserving scenarios where the lightest neutralino is the lightest supersymmetric particle are considered: the production of chargino pairs with decays via either W bosons or sleptons, and the direct production of slepton pairs. The analysis is optimised for the first of these scenarios, but the results are also interpreted in the others. No significant deviations from the Standard Model expectations are observed and limits at 95% confidence level are set on the masses of relevant supersymmetric particles in each of the scenarios. For a massless lightest neutralino, masses up to 420 Ge are excluded for the production of the lightest-chargino pairs assuming W-boson-mediated decays and up to 1 TeV for slepton-mediated decays, whereas for slepton-pair production masses up to 700 Ge are excluded assuming three generations of mass-degenerate sleptons.

Studies of the fragmentation of jets into charged particles in heavy-ion collisions can help in understanding the mechanism of jet quenching by the hot and dense QCD matter created in such collisions, the quark-gluon plasma. These proceedings present a measurement of the angular distribution of charged particles around the jet axis in root s(NN) = 5.02 TeV Pb+Pb and pp collisions, done using the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The measurement is performed inside jets reconstructed with the anti-k(t) algorithm with radius parameter R = 0.4, and is extended to regions outside the jet cone. Results are presented as a function of Pb+Pb collision centrality, and both jet and charged-particle transverse momenta.

A search for the pair production of heavy leptons as predicted by the type-III seesaw mechanism is presented. The search uses proton–proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to 139fb-1 of integrated luminosity recorded by the ATLAS detector during Run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider. The analysis focuses on final states with three or four electrons or muons from the possible decays of new heavy leptons via intermediate electroweak bosons. No significant deviations above the Standard Model expectation are observed; upper and lower limits on the heavy lepton production cross-section and masses are derived respectively. These results are then combined for the first time with the ones already published by ATLAS using the channel with two leptons in the final state. The observed lower limit on the mass of the type-III seesaw heavy leptons combining two, three and four lepton channels together is 910 GeV at the 95% confidence level. © 2022, CERN for the benefit of the ATLAS Collaboration.

© 2022, The Author(s).Cross-section measurements of top-quark pair production where the hadronically decaying top quark has transverse momentum greater than 355 GeV and the other top quark decays into ℓνb are presented using 139 fb−1 of data collected by the ATLAS experiment during proton-proton collisions at the LHC. The fiducial cross-section at s = 13 TeV is measured to be σ = 1.267 ± 0.005 ± 0.053 pb, where the uncertainties reflect the limited number of data events and the systematic uncertainties, giving a total uncertainty of 4.2%. The cross-section is measured differentially as a function of variables characterising the tt¯ system and additional radiation in the events. The results are compared with various Monte Carlo generators, including comparisons where the generators are reweighted to match a parton-level calculation at next-to-next-to-leading order. The reweighting improves the agreement between data and theory. The measured distribution of the top-quark transverse momentum is used to search for new physics in the context of the effective field theory framework. No significant deviation from the Standard Model is observed and limits are set on the Wilson coefficients of the dimension-six operators OtG and Otq(8), where the limits on the latter are the most stringent to date. Measurement of heavy flavor production and azimuthal anisotropy in small and large systems with ATLAS

Heavy-flavor hadron production and collective motion in A+A collisions provide insight into the energy loss mechanism and transport properties of heavy quarks in the QGP. The same measurements in p+A collisions serve as an important baseline for understanding the observations in A+A collisions. For example, detailed studies of heavy-flavor hadron azimuthal anisotropy in p+A collisions may help to address whether the observed long-range "ridge" correlation arises from hard or semi-hard processes, or if it is the result of mechanisms unrelated to the initial hardness scale. These proceedings summarize heavy-flavor hadron production, via their semi-leptonic decay to muons in 2.76 TeV Pb+Pb and pp collisions, non-prompt J/psi in 5.02 TeV Pb+Pb and pp collisions, and prompt D-0 mesons in 8.16 TeV p+Pb collisions using ATLAS detector at the LHC. Azimuthal anisotropy of heavy-flavor hadrons is studied via their decay muons in 2.76 TeV Pb+Pb and 8.16 TeV p+Pb collisions, and via non-prompt J/psi in 5.02 TeV Pb+Pb collisions. Strong suppression of heavy-flavor hadron production and azimuthal anisotropy are observed in Pb+Pb collisions, while significant azimuthal anisotropy of heavy-flavor muons is observed in p+Pb collisions, without evidence of the modification of their production rates.

Search for long-lived charginos based on a disappearing-track signature using 136 fb - 1 of pp collisions at √s = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector
(2022) Belotskiy, K.; Belyaev, N. L.; Bulekov, O.; Kurova, A.; Ponomarenko, D.; Proklova, N.; Pyatiizbyantseva, D.; Romaniouk, A.; Smirnov, S. Y.; Smirnov, Y.; Soldatov, E. Y.; Tikhomirov, V. A search for long-lived charginos produced either directly or in the cascade decay of heavy prompt gluino states is presented. The search is based on proton–proton collision data collected at a centre-of-mass energy of s = 13 TeV between 2015 and 2018 with the ATLAS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 136 fb- 1. Long-lived charginos are characterised by a distinct signature of a short and then disappearing track, and are reconstructed using at least four measurements in the ATLAS pixel detector, with no subsequent measurements in the silicon-microstrip tracking volume nor any associated energy deposits in the calorimeter. The final state is complemented by a large missing transverse-momentum requirement for triggering purposes and at least one high-transverse-momentum jet. No excess above the expected backgrounds is observed. Exclusion limits are set at 95% confidence level on the masses of the chargino and gluino for different chargino lifetimes. Chargino masses up to 660 (210) GeV are excluded in scenarios where the chargino is a pure wino (higgsino). For charginos produced during the cascade decay of a heavy gluino, gluinos with masses below 2.1 TeV are excluded for a chargino mass of 300 GeV and a lifetime of 0.2 ns. © 2022, The Author(s).

© 2019 The AuthorSearches for the Higgs boson decays H→ee and H→eμ are performed using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139fb−1 collected with the ATLAS detector in pp collisions at s=13 TeV at the LHC. No significant signals are observed, in agreement with the Standard Model expectation. For a Higgs boson mass of 125 GeV, the observed (expected) upper limit at the 95% confidence level on the branching fraction B(H→ee) is 3.6×10−4 (3.5×10−4) and on B(H→eμ) is 6.2×10−5 (5.9×10−5). These results represent improvements by factors of about five and six on the previous best limits on B(H→ee) and B(H→eμ) respectively.

Combined measurements of Higgs boson production and decay using up to 80 fb(-1) of proton-proton collision data at root S=13 TeV collected with the ATLAS experiment

Combined measurements of Higgs boson production cross sections and branching fractions arc presented. The combination is based on the analyses of the Higgs boson decay modes H -> gamma gamma, ZZ*, WW*, tau tau, b (b) over bar, mu mu, searches for decays into invisible final states, and on measurements of off-shell Higgs boson production. Up to 79.8 fb(-1) of proton-proton collision data collected at root S = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector are used. Results are presented for the gluon-gluon fusion and vector-boson fusion processes, and for associated production with vector bosons or top-quarks. The global signal strength is determined to be mu = 1.11(-0.08)(+0.09). The combined measurement yields an observed (expected) significance for the vector-boson fusion production process of 6.5 sigma (5.3 sigma). Measurements in kinematic regions defined within the simplified template cross section framework are also shown. The results are interpreted in terms of modifiers applied to the Standard Model couplings of the Higgs boson to other particles, and are used to set exclusion limits on parameters in two-Higgs-doublet models and in the simplified minimal supersynunetric Standard Model. No significant deviations from Standard Model predictions are observed.
