    Search for an exotic S =-2, Q =-2 baryon resonance in proton-proton interactions at root S-N(N)=17.3 GeV

    Pentaquark states have been extensively investigated theoretically in the context of the constituent quark model. In this paper results of an experimental search for pentaquarks in the Xi(-) pi(-), Xi(-) pi(+), (Xi) over bar (+) pi(-) and (Xi) over bar (+) pi(+) invariant mass spectra in proton-proton interactions at root s = 17.3 GeV are presented. Previous possible evidence from the NA49 collaboration of the existence of a narrow Xi(-) pi(-) baryon resonance in p + p interactions is not confirmed with almost 10 times greater event statistics. The search was performed using the NA61/SHINE detector which reuses the main components of the NA49 apparatus. No signal was observed with either the selection cuts of NA49 or newly optimized cuts.

    © 2021, The Author(s).Double-differential yields of Ξ (1530) and Ξ ¯ (1530) resonances produced in p+p interactions were measured at a laboratory beam momentum of 158 GeV/c. This measurement is the first of its kind in p+p interactions below LHC energies. It was performed at the CERN SPS by the NA61/SHINE collaboration. Double-differential distributions in rapidity and transverse momentum were obtained from a sample of 26 × 10 6 inelastic events. The spectra are extrapolated to full phase space resulting in mean multiplicity of Ξ (1530) (6.73 ± 0.25 ± 0.67) × 10 - 4 and Ξ ¯ (1530) (2.71 ± 0.18 ± 0.18) × 10 - 4. The rapidity and transverse momentum spectra and mean multiplicities were compared to predictions of string-hadronic and statistical model calculations.

    Measurement of e(+)e(-) Momentum and Angular Distributions from Linearly Polarized Photon Collisions

    The Breit-Wheeler process which produces matter and antimatter from photon collisions is experimentally investigated through the observation of 6085 exclusive electron-positron pairs in ultraperipheral Au + Au collisions at root s(NN) = 200 GeV. The measurements reveal a large fourth-order angular modulation of cos4 Delta phi = (16.8 +/- 2.5)% and smooth invariant mass distribution absent of vector mesons (phi, omega, and rho) at the experimental limit of <= 0.2% of the observed yields. The differential cross section as a function of e(+)e(-) pair transverse momentum P-perpendicular to peaks at low value with root < P-perpendicular to(2)> = 38.1 +/- 0.9 MeV and displays a significant centrality dependence. These features are consistent with QED calculations for the collision of linearly polarized photons quantized from the extremely strong electromagnetic fields generated by the highly charged Au nuclei at ultrarelativistic speed. The experimental results have implications for vacuum birefringence and for mapping the magnetic field which is important for emergent QCD phenomena.

    Measurement of charm and bottom production from semileptonic hadron decays in p plus p collisions at root s=200 GeV

    Measurements of the differential production of electrons from open-heavy-flavor hadrons with charm-and bottom-quark content in p + p collisions at root s = 200 GeV are presented. The measurements proceed through displaced-vertex analyses of electron tracks from the semileptonic decay of charm and bottom hadrons using the PHENIX silicon-vertex detector. The relative contribution of electrons from bottom decays to inclusive heavy-flavor-electron production is found to be consistent with fixed-order-plus-next-to-leading-log perturbative-QCD calculations within experimental and theoretical uncertainties. These new measurements in p + p collisions provide a precision baseline for comparable forthcoming measurements in A + A collisions.

    High transverse momentum (p(T)) particle production is suppressed owing to the parton (jet) energy loss in the hot dense medium created in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Redistribution of energy at low-to-modest p(T) has been difficult to measure, owing to large anisotropic backgrounds. We report a data-driven method for background evaluation and subtraction, exploiting the away-side pseudorapidity gaps, to measure the jetlike correlation shape in Au+Au collisions at root S-NN = 200 GeV in the STAR experiment. The correlation shapes, for trigger particles p(T) > 3 GeV/c and various associated particle p(T) ranges within 0.5 < p(T) < 10Gev/c, are consistent with Gaussians, and their widths increase with centrality. The results indicate jet broadening in the medium created in central heavy-ion collisions.

    Measurements of the transverse-momentum-dependent cross sections of J/psi production at mid-rapidity in proton plus proton collisions at root s=510 and 500 GeV with the STAR detector

    We present measurements of the differential cross sections of inclusive J/psi meson production as a function of transverse momentum (p(T)(J/psi) ) using the mu(+)mu(-) and e(+)e(-) decay channels in proton + proton collisions at center-of-mass energies of 510 and 500 GeV, respectively, recorded by the STAR detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The measurement from the mu(+)mu(-) channel is for 0 < p(T)(J/psi) < 9 GeV/c and rapidity range vertical bar y(J/psi)vertical bar < 0.4, and that from the e(+)e(-) channel is for 4 < p(T)(J/psi) < 20 GeV/c and vertical bar y(J/psi)vertical bar < 1.0. The psi(2S) to J/psi ratio is also measured for 4 < p(T)(meson) < 12 GeV/c through the e(+)e(-) decay channel. Model calculations, which incorporate different approaches toward the J/psi production mechanism, are compared with experimental results and show reasonable agreement within uncertainties.
